It is capable of inducing respiratory, urinary tract, gastrointestinal, and abdominal infections. It functions by inhibiting DNA gyrase (a type II topoisomerase) and topoisomerase IV, the enzymes responsible for negative supercoiling of chromosomes and DNA strand separation, thus blocking initiation of bacterial replication.
