It acts as a competitive inhibitor of HMG CoA reductase Pravastatin competitively inhibits hepatic hydroxymethyl-glutaryl coenzyme A reductase, the enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a key step in cholesterol synthesis.
