The molecule can be hydrolyzed to form a hydrated silica network while the n-octyl groups are held together through hydrophobic interaction. The network can host hydrophobic molecules through interactions with the hydrophobic core and the hydrophilic silica cores can encapsulate hydrophilic molecules such as horseradish peroxidase (HRP).
