Bayer's aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid, CAS 50-78-2) was first synthesized by Felix Hoffmann in 1897 and marketed from 1899. Originally a dye company founded 1863, Bayer pivoted to pharmaceuticals. Aspirin remains one of the most widely used drugs in history.
